We are a pioneer school situated on Birpai land in the heart of Port Macquarie. In 2021 we entered our fourth year as a school. We are a non-government, independent school and we hold NESA registration to offer classes from Kindergarten to Class 3. We follow the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework as developed by Steiner Education Australia.
Every school has its own particular character and brings unique gifts into the community. The gifts Port Macquarie Steiner School brings are those of dedication, integrity, resourcefulness, gratitude and humility.
Growing our school in Port Macquarie is such an exciting venture as alongside it we are also growing community which is such a healthy contribution to the region.
Our Core Values
- Education which nurtures the head, the heart and the hands.
- Social relationships as a means for connection, inclusion, trust and meaningful learning.
- Art, creativity, and imagination as an integral part of the learning process to cultivate self-motivated free thinkers who are equipped to meet the challenges of the future.
- Valuing whole-life-learning and actively supporting learning for parents, families and our community as well as for the children.
- Inclusiveness as opposed to exclusiveness.
- Valuing community and the importance of skills and human contribution before economic value.
- Education should be accessible to all, regardless of social, cultural or economic background.
- Supporting the long-term study and experience of the natural environment in order to deeply connect to ourselves, one another, and the world as a whole.
- Recognising that the actions and thoughts of each individual impact the health of our community, and then our planet.
- Festivals to celebrate the change of seasons, the natural rhythms of the earth and the community, and to experience reverence and gratitude for the natural cycles of life.
- Rhythm as a vital connection to learning, teaching, and a healthy life.
Port Macquarie Steiner School was born out of an impulse that took hold in the hearts of five parents with young children at our weekly Steiner playgroup in 2016. This small group of parents banded together and made the decision to commit to doing all they could to start the school.
The company, Port Macquarie Steiner Limited - a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee - was registered at the beginning of 2017. In February of that year a very successful fundraising lunch and auction at Long Point Winery raised enough funds to pay legal, building, and council fees for the approval of the DA to use the hall at 8 Table Street in Port Macquarie for our initial school site.
A significant donation from the estate of the late Enid Cryer was gifted in May, which provided the resources needed for the upgrades on the premises at 8 Table Street to proceed.
Our current site was a blank canvas when we began the school in 2018. Since then, with the support of the parent body and members of our school community, we have established beautiful classrooms, gardens and play spaces for the children.
Throughout this journey, our school has been truly fortunate to draw to itself all that is needed for a pioneer school to grow. Through numerous challenges we have established a strong foundation and are excited by the prospect before us of putting our roots down on our permanent site. Recently, after much searching, we have found a beautiful block of land with tall trees where we hope to build our future primary school.
We are a team of highly dedicated people who are focussed on our goals and excited about the opportunity in our hands. We are energised by our project and the gifts it will bring to the emerging generations in Port Macquarie.
Port Macquarie Steiner School is located on Birpai land in the heart of Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW. We are surrounded by waterways and the natural beauty of beaches, rivers, mountains and national parks. Port Macquarie has a delightful climate year-round for the enjoyment of many different outdoor activities.
The school is currently located in rented premises at 8 Table Street, in central Port Macquarie with nearby access to Kooloonbung Creek Reserve.
We have recently purchased 4 acres of land in Thrumster on which we plan to build our permanent school. The site was chosen for it's location, proximity to our current school site and existing community, natural beauty and alignment with the strategy and growth plans for the area.

School Structure & Governance
The School is committed to proper governance. As a not-for-profit Company Limited by Guarantee, the Board is entirely volunteer-run, and all profits are delivered back into the organisation. Port Macquarie Steiner Limited is a registered charity with the Australian Charity and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). The company is defined by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) as the Proprietor of the School.
The task of governance involves the Board of Directors, the Education Director and other staff members. The Board of Directors carries ultimate legal and financial responsibility for the School.
Parents make up a portion of the Board and their input and contribution is highly valued. As a community organisation, the input of the School community and the local community is imperative to the success of the School and to ensure our direction meets the needs of the School community.
The educational decisions relating to the School, the wellbeing of the students and the curriculum, are the responsibility of the Education Director, and all significant changes within the School policies, procedures or curriculum must be agreed to by the Board of Directors.
Ten regular board meetings are held throughout the School year each month during School term. An Annual General Meeting is held once each year in line with the Company’s constitution. There are also Committees of assigned groups to assist with other areas of the management and functioning of the School.
